We’re going to show you an alternative—with extensions! Instead of plunging into a full-blown color treatment, you can dip your toes in the water with hair extensions.
Have you ever instantly regretted a do-it-yourself hair color treatment—especially going from dark to light?
Maybe that sandy blonde look clashed with your olive skin. Maybe that copper red made your head a little too much like a brand-new penny. Maybe you just wanted a little change in your hair color but didn’t want to deal with harsh chemicals in liquid coloring products.
What about another option that requires no commitment, no smells, no mess, and no regrets?
We’re going to show you an alternative—with extensions! Instead of plunging into a full-blown color treatment, you can dip your toes in the water with hair extensions.
Section off your hair by parting it with a comb at 45-degree angles on the sides and a straight horizontal line across the back, at the bottom of your head.
The side lines start towards the top front of your head and come down to meet the horizontal line in the back. Make sure your part lines are clean and even. You’re going to be adding extensions here, and you want a straight part to work with. You’ll want to leave the bottom section of your hair down, so you can brush in the layers of extensions as you go.
Take the top portion of your hair, brush it up, and clip it to the crown of your head, away from where you will be clipping in the hair extensions. Make sure you don’t have strands hanging down the back of your head that will get in the way of adding your extensions.
*Choose the size that fits here. You’ll want to make sure it’s right near the part, attaching it to the roots of the bottom section of your hair. Optionally, you can straighten the bottom portion of your hair with your new locks.
Again, make sure your line is clean. Brush the top section of hair up, and clip it to the crown of your head.
This helps the extensions to blend in with your hair, and it’ll make it easier to see where you need to put your next hair extension.
REPEAT STEP 3 THREE MORE TIMES, UNTIL YOU’VE REACHED THE TOP, LEAVING ENOUGH HAIR TO COVER YOUR WEFTS.
Loosen the clip, and brush your hair out. Once you’ve done these five total extensions with 1/2-inch sections of your natural hair in between, brush out your hair. You’re almost done! Now it’s time to do the sides.
Starting on one side, section off your hair horizontally at about the height of your forehead, just in front of your ears.
Just like with the back section, you’ll want to keep this line clean. You’ll also want to keep your hair piece hidden, so start behind your bangs if you have them (or where they would theoretically begin if you don’t).
Clip the top section of hair away from where you will be adding the extensions.
Or just brushing this section over to the opposite side might be OK—but keep that parting line clean and even, so your extensions will be clean and even as well.
Clip in ESTELLES SECRET ABIGAIL BROWN 4+8.
*Again, choose a weft size that fits here, making sure that the seam is hidden. On each side, we’re only adding two hair extensions (as opposed to the five in the back). Again, you can choose to straighten your hair here if you want.
Again, make sure your line is clean. Brush the top section of hair up, and clip it to the crown of your head.
This helps the extensions to blend in with your hair, and it’ll make it easier to see where you need to put your next hair extension.
Repeat Steps 1 to 4 for the other side.
There you have it! It’s easier, cleaner, and (in our opinion) way better than using chemical hair products to achieve a different color blend.
